Abstract

Increasing number of people are engaging in psychoactive substance use on a daily basis. The pattern, type and effect of substances varies from place and time. It is also related to the socioeconomic status of the populace. The north-central part of Nigeria has been known with the highest lifetime prevalence of substance use. We set out to study the current pattern, types and effects of substances on the local communities of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau state, Nigeria through a convenient sampling method. Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) was used.
Prevalence of substance use was high (49.3%). Alcohol is still the most used drug. Newer drugs such as codeine syrup and tramadol have displaced cigarette and cannabis down to the 4th and 5th positions. More women are now engaging in substance use and prefer odourless substances to alcohol and cigarette. Majority of the substance users were unemployed at the time of the study.
Community leaders, religious leaders and the government should rise to combat the rising menace of substance use and proliferation of prescription only drugs in our communities.
