This second Issue in Volume 1 of Journal of Research in Basic and Clinical Sciences goes with the title: Gonadotoxic potentials of Di-(2-Ethyl Hexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) in infertility. The authors tried to assess the impact of DEHP on the fertility of adult Wister rats and came to the conclusion that DEHP in high concentrations reduces sperm count and viability, hence causing infertility in those animals. They went further to advise the general public to reduce human exposure to this substance so as to reduce its contribution to infertility among humans. Also, the association of low-grade inflammation and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among first degree relatives with type 2 diabetes mellitus was examined. The authors found that CVD risk factors included first direct relative, smoking, some obesity and raised blood glucose levels. In another study, the association of left atrial enlargement (LAE) with increased left ventricular mass in adults with long standing hypertension was examined. The authors found that the strongest correlates of LAE were left ventricular mass and left ventricular hypertrophy. They went further to advise on the need to control blood pressure to avoid some of the cardiovascular emergencies with often catastrophic outcomes.
On behalf of the Chairman, and indeed the editorial board of JRBCS, I congratulate all the authors who made it to this edition.
